Onions are produced in Italy, Germany, Holland, Argentina, France and Chile.
Italian onions are available on the markets during all the year with many varieties; among them Dorata di Parma, Rossa di Tropea, Ramata di Milano, Bianca precocissima di Barletta e di Pompei, Bianca di Chioggia.
They have got a bulb whose colour depends on the variety, with a round shape for winter varieties and a flat sharp for summer varieties.
For a long conservation, keep a temperature of 32-36 degrees F/0-2 centigrade degrees. Keep a good circulation of the air during the conservation; keep the onions away from the direct sun light. Conserve far from food that absorb the smells. Make sure that they are conserved in a well ventilated area.
Onions have a balsamic action on gastrointestinal tract, on urinary tract and on respiratory system, they decrease glycaemia level and they are suitable against hypertension.
