It is cultivated in all the countries with a hot weather, but especially in Israel, Cyprus and South Africa. In Italy it is cultivated especially in Calabria and in Sicily.
The grapefruit is similar to the orange but it is larger and it has a bitter-sweet taste. It consists of 11-14 segments of juicy pulp with large, rough seeds and the skin is rich in essential oils. Marsh White: uniform, thin skin with white pulp and very few seeds. Star Ruby: thin skin, juicy and red pulp.
Conserve the grapefruits in a well ventilated area.
Grapefruits are very rich of fibres and vitamins: half grapefruit provides the necessary daily value of vitamin C and it is also a rich source of vitamin A and B. Fibres and pectins have a swallowing quality in water contact and so they decrease the sense of hunger, they influence the intestinal functions and sugar, lipids and cholesterol metabolism.
